About the artist
No Luck an artist from Ardeche; lives and works in Montpellier, South of France. Influenced and inspired by writings, symbols, language systems and cultures, No Luck creates his own language. The writing system he has developed may be reminiscent of ancient cultures and their scripts, or of a culture that lies in the future and is therefore utopian. His characters build on each other and fit together. They seem to make sense and yet no one can decipher them. nnnHis canvas is diverse. His works are located in various places: on various streets, on floors and on walls. Other works he creates with natural objects in forests, on beaches and on lakes. His portfolio ranges from street art to land art and that’s not all. His art asks one question above all, what are the characters about and where do they come from. They can be arranged like runes and have something mystical. Sometimes they remind us of our Western writing system, sometimes of an Eastern, Nordic one, or one not at all comparable to what we are familiar with. It is about cultures and a crucial character of exactly that; the writing. Writings and symbols exist in all cultures and they are important in many ways for the coexistence of the same cultural community.
															The Collection
Unique garments designed and hand painted by Julien Barriol aka. No Luck. Neglected textiles are used like a canvas with a brush and an acrylic based textile paint, which keeps the effect and texture of real paint but is washable at the same time.
The collection consists of & unique pieces which are all sold.
Some of the names and the meanings of the jackets:
Signs a secondhand garment found in a small store in Brussels. Failure to understand or overlook signs can have fatal consequences. Overlooking a warning sign leads to an accident. SOS. Seeing the same avoids the accident. Verbal and also physical signs enable communication and are therefore essential and always given. Signs are everywhere and we don’t notice them all because there are so many different ones and our everyday life is going too fast. Time runs faster than we could interpret all the signs and thus we focus on the most important for us.
Token a secondhand garment found in a small store in Brussels. Token is kept simple compared to the other single pieces of the collection. Symbols are placed on both sleeves of the jacket. These are two different sequence of characters, which are on the same jacket and therefore the same background. The origin of the word comes from English and is also interpreted as a sign or mark. The definition of token in language use is the following. “Sequence of digits or letters delimited by spaces or punctuation.” The Duden. Of course, the token also belongs to the blockchain, where it is used as an identifier in a very specific communication network.
Is it possible to identify the sequence of symbols?
Speech, I got the denim jacket from a friend. She had bought it in a thrift store in London. She gave it to me because I love denim jackets and I gave it to No Luck. I love it when there is a story to a piece of clothing! And look at her, she became one of my favorite pieces that Julien designed.
When I saw this piece of No Luck I was thinking about a written text for a speech.
There are so many ways to express yourself. Speech is one of the most important expressions humans have. That is why the freedom of speech has so much power. And there are so many amazing and moving speeches. Showing us the force of words compared with expression.
The idea is to design more unique pieces at the request of customers inside on the same principle on either already existing clothing or to buy the matching piece in a thrift store. For more information follow ZAË and No Luck on Instagram! @julien_barriol
